These are descendants of burros brought to North America by the Spanish in the 1600's and later prized by gold prospectors for their hardiness and adaptability.

The ancestors of these burros either escaped from their owners, or were set free. They are accustomed to humans and are often adopted as pets. These particular ones were stopping by a camp site hoping for food.
